Abstract
Muslims in the European Union are the bearers of different, even divergent, visions of Islam. Their attitudes towards the letter of the religion embrace the full spectrum of positions, from the strictest religious observance to a distancing from ritual practice. While some young Muslims, in the name of a theology of engaged citizenship, are politically active, there are also many who do not make their relationship to Islam as unique faith the only prism through which they interpret everyday reality and act in society. In the same way that Islamic life cannot be reduced to a religion-centred existence, Muslims do not act simply as a function of exclusively religious goals.
