Abstract

A history of science and technology in Manchester begins with the Manchester Literary & Philosophical Society and its associated educational institutions. The development, from these beginnings, of the present centres of higher education in Manchester is then traced through the period of the Industrial Revolution. The concurrent growth of education and industry provided an excellent basis for the increasing application of technology. This is illustrated by a description of the growth of the mass spectrometry industry in the Manchester area up to the present day. ©1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
