Abstract

Organic soils (peats) in areas of SW Tasmania have been degraded by fire and subsequent erosive processes. An area affected by frequent firing has been examined and mapped to demonstrate the extent and severity of erosion. A high fire frequency is likely to lead to increased peat loss, a decrease in height and cover of vegetation and ultimately to areas denuded of peat. Implications for land management are discussed. -Author
