The Relationship between Academic Motivation and Academic Achievement of the Students

Abstract

Background: the purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between academic motivation and academic achievement among Tehran University students. Method: In this cross-sectional correlation study, 252 Tehran University students were required to fill the academic motivation questionnaire. This 43-item questionnaire measured 8 aspects of motivation. Criterion for academic achievement was a mark which students themselves reported. Data were analyzed through using SPSS16 by means of Pearson Correlation coefficient. Results: Data analysis indicated positive and significant correlation between Academic Motivation and Academic Achievement. Furthermore subscales of task, effort, competition, social concern within eight subscales had a significant relationship with academic achievement. Conclusion: Regarding the results, students' academic achievement requires coordination and interaction between different aspects of motivation.
