Abstract

Recently appreciation for the unique boron-nitrogen (BN) bond properties triggered a burgeoning interest for this bonding motif. BN bonds have been extensively exploited to construct self-assembled molecularly defined nanostructures, polymeric materials, and molecular sensors for the detection of carbohydrates. The isosterism between BN and CC bonds was also recognized as a powerful tool to tune the stereoelectronic properties of organic molecules. In this context, in this review we discuss the use of this ligation motif as a construction tool in the construction of aromatic and nonaromatic heterocycles, supramolecular architectures, and chemosensing systems.
