Abstract
Thalassaemia was first described by the American paediatrician Thomas Cooley in 1925. The term 'thalassaemia' was derived from the Greek word 'thalassa' which means 'sea' and 'anaemia' because the disease was initially reported in regions adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. Alternatively, thalassaemia is known as Cooley's anaemia.
