Abstract
According to a study conducted in Niakhar, Senegal, nearly 50% of households do not produce enough cereals to meet their needs. The shortfall is made up to a large extent thanks to migration and mutual assistance within the family. Certain characteristics of households are not conducive to productivity (households that are big, are headed by women or belong to a caste) whereas others guarantee that productivity will improve (the household head's advanced age, polygamy). Smaller households headed by women effectively offset their lesser productivity by harnessing resources from the outside.© Editions de l'EHESS. Tous droits réservés pour tous pays.
