Abstract

Purpose: This pa per a ims to a nalyze the effects of the technology-mediated interruptions on the conflicts a nd the performance of individuals during their work a nd non-work time. Theoretical framework: This work is ba sed on the Conservation of Resources Theory, focusing on conflict a nd quality of life in the digita l a ge. Design/methodology/approach: To evaluate the influence of technology interruptions on conflicts a nd performance, we a pplied a survey to ma nagement a nd a ccounting professionals a nd obtained 399 valid questionnaires. We a nalyzed the data through Pa rtial Lea st Squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings: The da ta analysis demonstrates that interruptions – a s expected – contribute to increa sing conflicts both at work and a t non-work. However, contrary to previous research, interruptions can also increase performance in both instances. Research, Practical & Social implications: The proposed approach has a practical value for tea chers a nd students of human-computer intera ction and IT pra ctitioners in a ny other professional environment where the technology represents a channel between personal and professional life. Originality/value: This resea rch mea sured and a na lyzed the effects of technology-media ted interruptions on conflict and individual performance in Brazil. The results showed tha t technology-mediated interruptions a re rela ted to the quality of life a nd leisure time, showing tha t conflicts due to technology a re not a buzzword. Also, resea rch findings present a new resea rch pa th a s interruptions tha t positively influence the individual’s performance a re not fully understood.
