Abstract

This study explores a modular construction method for hemispherical domes using flexible fabric formwork supported by geodesic lamella grids. The system employs a suspended membrane that deforms under gravity, while the bending-active grid defines the curvature and provides temporary structural support during casting. Dome segmentation is derived from polyhedral geometry, enabling the off-site prefabrication of repeatable panels for subsequent on-site assembly. Two physical prototypes, a 1:5 scale gypsum panel and a 1:2 scale concrete panel, were fabricated to evaluate the feasibility of this method. Results from both fabrication and simulation indicate that this approach may offer a viable alternative to rigid molds for producing curved concrete structures.
