Abstract

If a landscape needs an observer and this observer has cultural baggage and personal experiences, their perception of and the value assigned to any given landscape will be contingent on said baggage and these experiences. In this article our goal is to assess landscapes according to preferences based on an aesthetic component. The methodology used was the test of pair-wise photographs representing different visual landscape units of the Havana Region in Cuba. We show how the best-valued landscapes are historical/cultural units, ornamental and maritime ones. These preferences coincide with those found in literature, where vegetation, water, hills, and humans are consistently the elements occurring in those landscapes of higher value.
