Abstract

Hikayat Banjar contains traces of the ancient arts of Banjar and its surroundings. In this work, the poet repeatedly states that the customs in Banjar have their roots in Majapahit. The Banjar's artistic traces of this text also show a connection with Javanese and Balinese arts. The aims of this research are to reveal the past art forms contained in the Hikayat Banjar and see their relation to Javanese art. This study views that culture as a text. This research is a literary reception research on the Hikayat Banjar text. Hikayat Banjar recounted various types of musical, dance, and traditional drama. These art forms show a similar pattern with Javanese and Balinese art, especially from the palace. From a musical point of view, gamelan in Hikayat Banjar is closely related to the karawitan tradition in Javanese courts. The dance in Hikayat Banjar shows similarities to the "wireng" dance genre in Java. Hikayat Banjar categorized the form of theatre in two kinds, which are played by humans and puppets theatre. Despite having the same artistic roots as Java and Bali, the arts in Banjar developed in the different situations and conditions. The relationship between Javanese and Banjar arts is related to migration from Java to Banjarmasin in the 17th century.
