In this article the author discusses issues associated with workflow design for the acquisition of electronic books (e-books) in academic libraries. The author describes the interconnected business planning responsibilities for the library's cataloging, acquisitions, and technology departments in order to successfully coordinate the purchasing of e-books from publishers. The role of integrated library system (ILS) vendors in this process and various types of e-book acquisitions, including one-time, subscription-based, and rental purchases, are also mentioned. The article also provides observations, comments, and suggestions related to the author's experiences designing a pilot project in the libraries at Winthrop University regarding e-books collections and e-book readers.
