Abstract

Groundwater is an essential source of water supply for a large number of urban and village residents throughout the world. Thus it is of great importance when it is suitable for uses in agriculture and as drinking water. We aimed in this study to develop a new approach based on the minimal simulated thickness of the vadose zone using the flow model to determine the vulnerability characterization of the groundwater system with the classic SI vulnerability method. A study case was the Magra river aquifer, which is a significant source of water in LaSpezia province in Italy, and it has been subject to pollution due to many anthropogenic activities. Results revealed that 70% of the alluvial plain over this aquifer is classified as vulnerable to highly vulnerable.
