Abstract
The effect of the rootstock M27 on the juvenile period (JP) of seedlings was small; it became smaller or negligible as the JP of the population decreased. The JP was lengthened by the use of lateral buds (rather than apical buds) for propagation and interference with the growth of young seedlings, e.g. by heavy topping. Seedlings with thicker stems had a shorter JP than those with thinner stems. Pre-selection on this basis was possible. Apple seedlings of the same populations on their own roots or on a rootstock performed similarly in the Netherlands and Switzerland. It is suggested that propagation on a rootstock is not necessary in breeding for reduced juvenile period
