Abstract

In the 21st century, new educational requirements for an active and critical integration of citizens have resulted in curriculum activities including what has been called Digital Competence (DC). In this new scene, this research aims to describe and understand the process of introducing and using school’s curriculum activities to obtain digital competence in Galicia’s primary schools, in this paper focuses on media literacy. A qualitative research was carried out with an ethnographic approach involving participant observation, interviews, focus groups and document analysis. Data was examined with Atlas.ti 7, based on the Grounded Theory. The results show that in schools spaces have been created for media learning, although it seems that they aren’t being used efficiently as essential aspects to digital competence are left out, such as critical analysis of information. The school is seen as the perfect digital learning environment that guarantees social justice in today’s contemporary society, a society in which students’ participation is fundamental to build up different dimensions of digital competence.
