ABSTRACT Burden of Care and Coping with Stress Styles of Caregivers of Chronic Psychiatric Patients Aim: This study was conducted to determine the burden of care and coping with stress levels of the caregivers of chronic psychiatric patients. Methods: The research was carried out with 103 caregivers of psychiatric patients who had an inpatient treatment at a university and a state hospital in central Anatolia region of Turkey. Data were collected by Information Form, the Burden Interview and Coping Styles Scale with Stress. Percentage distribution, mean, Pearson correlation, t test and ANOVA tests were used for statistical evaluation. Results: The average age of caregivers was 47.65±14.24, most of them were married and primary school graduates. The majority of caregivers (40.8%) were patient's parents. In the study, the mean score of burden interview was 41.23±14.67, and burden of care perception was moderate (50.5%). There was a moderate positive level significant relationship between Burden Interview and helpless approach scores of Coping Styles Scale with Stress (r=0.478; p=0.000) and a weak positive level significant relationship between the Burden Interview and submissive approach scores (r=0.246; p=0.012). Conclusion: The burden of care perception of caregivers was at moderate level and they used effective coping methods more. Caregivers who used ineffective methods in coping with stress had higher burden of care perception.
