Coincidental finding of isolated congenital double-orifice mitral valve in two adult patients

Abstract

Double-orifice mitral valve (DOMV) is an uncommon congenital malformation characterized by two valve orifices with two separate subvalvular structures. Double-orifice mitral valve is usually associated with various other congenital malformations and isolated DOMV is rare. We describe here two adult cases of DOMV without any other malformations, examined by two-and three-dimensional echocardiography for detailed evaluation of the mitral valve and subvalvular structures. We stress the need for careful imaging of the mitral valve by three-dimensional echocardiography even in patients free of other congenital heart anomalies. © 2010 The Author.
