Abstract
Visual imaging has remained the primary modality for manual clinical assessment and intervention in abdominal surgery despite the increasing popularity of radiological imaging-based diagnosis. This includes endoscopic diagnosis laboratories and laparoscopic and robotic laparoscopic telesurgical procedures. Advances such as wireless capsule endoscopes and robotic surgeries have both provided visual access to organs previously not well imaged and improved the quality and adoption of minimally invasive techniques. This chapter summarizes the technology and applications of visual diagnosis and visually guided robotic surgery along with image analysis methods in development for these images.
