Abstract
Despite the importance given by public policy to the achievement of educational qualifications, one young person in seven leaves school in France without a recognised qualification. A survey of school dropouts identifies several profiles, starting from the three dimensions of schooling: academic success, adjustment to norms of behaviour, and commitment. This work is based on the hypothesis that these three dimensions are relatively independent with each other, which implies multiple configurations of the school experiences leading to school dropout. The characteristics and the statements of the young people interviewed confirm this assumption; revealing four distinct profiles of student dropouts.
