Abstract

Reviews the book, Understanding Regulation Disorders of Sensory Processing in Children: Management Strategies for Parents and Professionals by Pratibha Reebye and Aileen Stalker (2008). This book meets the need for a concise understanding of regulation disorders of sensory processing (RDSP). The children the authors describe live in a world that is too bright, too distracting, too noisy, too crowded, and what they touch may be very irritating. All this sensory overstimulation can cause much anxiety and tension. However, by understanding their sensory profile and providing the right environment, clinicians and caregivers can have happier, more functional children. Actually these kids are the sensory seekers. They need more sensory input to feel awake and vital. Once caregivers and teachers provide this, it is rewarding to see how much bad behavior diminishes. The authors of this book explain how circles of communication allow caregivers to "loop" with their infants which is a critical process for developing attachment and emotional regulation. The book also touches on the importance of praxis which refers to the process of planning and executing especially new or novel muscle movements. This improved sensory modulation will lead to enduring improvements in behavior, muscle coordination, and cognition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
