Abstract

Hastelloy-XR alloy was coated with glasses to improve the corrosion resistance in boiling sulfuric acid for application in thermochemical hydrogen production process. Pre-oxidation of Hastelloy-XR alloy enabled one to produce well-adhered glass coating. The glass composition with the highest corrosion resistance was 48SiO2-8B2O3-6Al2 O3-11CaO-25BaO-2ZnO. The glass-coated Hastelloy-XR alloy showed almost no mass change in boiling sulfuric acid of 40 to 80% aqueous solution at 408 to 503 K after 43 ks.
