Abstract

This paper presents an exploratory study which aims to analyze how the textbook contributes to the environmental education in schools. It discusses the predominance of a view which still is capitalist and ruler of nature and contributor with a society which has a revolutionary vision in the sustainable model. The analyzes were performed in a holistic and transformative perspective, regarding discussions between environmental education professionals on the role of the textbook as a producer of dominant ideologies in relation to the environment, from the science book of the sixth year of Primary School. This book was assigned by most of the educators responsible for the textbooks selection, for the public schools in the Regional Education Center of Maringá and will be distributed by the National Textbook Program (NPDB) in 2011. It was concluded that the book for primary school science has really changed the concept that man is the ruler of nature and that the awareness and respect for the environment is evolving for the sake of a sustainable society.
