Abstract

This article portrays the development ofQuranic exegesis studies in contemporaryIndonesia by scrutinizing various ap-proaches used by Indonesian Islamicscholars in understanding the Qur’an.Through a bibliographical study, theauthor argues that there has been a shiftin the study of tafsir among Islamicscholars in Indonesia, including among theadvocates of the Islamic Liberal Networks(JIL). This shift can be seen in the follow-ing aspects: 1) the way Indonesians definethe nature of the Qur’an essence,revelation, codification); 2) about thepeople who have authority to interpretthe Qur’an; 3) the methodology and toolsto analyze the Qur’an; 4) references, and5) the objective of interpreting Quran.Kata kunci: Quranic hermeneutics,Indonesia, Islamic literature, tafsirmethodology, JIL.
