Abstract

Molecular endocrinology in combination with transgenic technology offers excellent opportunities for creating genetically-modified animals for basic research and for aquaculture in Pacific Rim countries. Transgenic animals provide excellent experimental models for studying basic research problems in the molecular genetics of development, the biological action of hormones, and the evolution of hormones. Transgenic technology also offers opportunities for improving the genetic characteristics for organisms for aquaculture, and for designing bioreactors to produce valuable proteins for pharmaceutical or industrial purposes. We have been studying the biological actions and evolution of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factors using transgenic finfish and shellfish, including the common carp, channel catfish, zebrafish, medaka, oyster, abalone, and sea urchin. In this paper we shall present representative results from a variety of our cloning, expression, and gene transfer studies in an attempt to demonstrate the utility and potential application of a molecular endocrinology approach, coupled with transgenic technology, to develop improved stocks of finfish and shellfish for aquaculture.
