REIMAGINING STEM HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH: PART 1

Abstract

Across STEM fields, there is no shortage of challenges related to diversity, equity, access, accessibility, and inclusion. The persistence of these challenges suggests that alternative framings of the problems and possible solutions might be required. This article introduces a two-part series of the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering (JWM) focused on “Reimagining STEM higher education research.” The 10 articles in the series call for members of the STEM education community to examine the STEM education system more critically and holistically. Issue 1 includes five articles that highlight the importance of recognizing that STEM is not a place of neutrality; call for the use of antiracist, restorative approaches; and outline the importance of being intentional and specific in our approaches to solving these problems. Collectively, these articles highlight the importance of reflexivity, intentionality, and restitution in our journey to transforming STEM higher education.
