Abstract

A multitude of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping, storage, and receiving projects will be undertaken in the next five years, LNG is the liquid version of natural gas and poses several unique fire and explosion hazards. This paper will discuss the safety and fire protection considerations that should be applied to new LNG projects. Essentially, LNG is characterized by unique fire and explosion hazards, which pose many safety challenges to project managers, design engineers, safety professionals, and operators over the life of these projects. It is paramount that consideration is given to the bazards and sound process safety principles are applied during all phases of these projects: design, construction, start-up, and operation. This paper covers siting of tbe plant and equipment within the plant, fire protection, fire and explosion modeling, and impacts. © 2005 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
