Abstract

Historical buildings, which have contributed to the economy for many years and have lost their functions over time, appear as ruins in the center with the expansion of cities. If these buildings were functionalized again, they would be both preserved and used for social and cultural facilities. With the function change of empty and tenement buildings, they will survive and become the enrichers of the urban life. Protecting the historical value of the building, it must be converted according to the needs of the area and become an ordinary part of the city. The aim of this study, to explain the importance and necessity of adaptive reuse of historical-industrial buildings in the center of the cities by showing the examples from Turkey and the world. With in this scope, protection and new function proposals for Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory were suggested. Considering the location of the factory, its historical importance, the needs of the city and the architectural qualifications of the building, a proposal was made for the transformation of the Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory into the Museum of Contemporary Art. In the chosen field, this study offers new spatial analysis and innovative ideas for the building by treasuring the architectural heritage.
