Abstract

The methodological experience of including practical industrial classes of casting processes is presented and discussed. This subject is included in the Engineering Materials course at the University do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC) in Brazil. The experience consisted of the participation of students in the usual casting activities of selected metallurgical companies of the region. The students got involved in tasks such as calculation of load, loading the furnace, temperature control, chemical analysis, molding and finishing. These activities gave the student a unique practical experience on the casting process of ferrous materials, associating the theory learned in classes with real industrial processes. The experience represented and important motivating agent for learning and showed that knowledge acquisition was more effective than in those cases in which practical experience is absent.
