Abstract

The effectiveness of steel flat coupler bar introduced at the core of exterior beam-column joint has been assessed. Totally four groups of eight half scaled specimens have been chosen and the joints have been tested under reverse cyclic loading condition. To prove the efficiency of the proposed steel flat coupler bar joint totally three categories of joint details have been taken. The first (E-SMRJ) and second category (E-OMRJ) of joint has been detailed as per the recommendation of code IS13920 & IS456. The third category (E-FTJ) of the joint name as field joint that is no anchorage and no joint stirrups have been provided to the joint core. The experimental results showed that the specimen constructed with steel flat coupler bar was superior behavior than that of all other specimens. Also, the experimental results were compared with the internal codes (ACI352-1991, NZS 3101-1995, EN 1998-1:2003) and national code (IS13920-1993 draft) requirements. The code comparative result of the proposed joint specimen is found satisfactory and the predicted joint shear strength values are close to the experimental result.
