Abstract
In outlining everyday resistance in the countryside, Jim Scott describes an essentially leaderless process. Here I look at everyday resistance in an urban setting, resistance that crosses over from everyday resistance to what Andrew Turton called "the middle ground." I find that here leadership is crucial to resistance. I also find that changes in the structure of political opportunity give rise to new patterns of leadership and new forms of resistance.
