Abstract

By the end of the 1990s it was well established that the editions of Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft [Economy and Society] published after 1956 were a construction of the editor, Johannes Winckelmann. However, this article focuses on the shortcomings of the first edition (1922) responded by Marianne, Max Weber's widow, and Melchior Palyi, one of his late students. Drawing from his research on how the work was edited, the author concludes that it is inappropriate to speak of a book with the title Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft written by Max Weber. Marianne and Palyi only occasionally altered the body text, but they frequently changed or invented titles, subtitles, the list of contents, as well as the content summaries that precede certain chapters. However, they most consequentially decision was to include several posthumous manuscripts intoWirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Even though Marianne and Palyi incorporated theminto the so-called second and third parts, it is almost certain that Weber had discarded these manuscripts, which were no more than tentative versions of the chapters includ-ed in Part One, the only one that Weber sent to the printer. Similarly, it was Mari-anne, not Weber, who decided which should be appropriate sequence of the chapters. Some of these choices were a consequence of Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft being part of a large, multivolume encyclopedia of economics, the Grundriss der Sozialökonomik, edited by Weber himself. The article draws on a wealth of primary sources such as Weber's correspondence with his editor, Paul Siebeck, as well as the publishing contracts, and several tentative lists of contents for the encyclopedia.
