Abstract
This chapter focuses on the current state of adolescent dating violence (ADV) measurement. Although research on ADV is now in its fourth decade, literature dedicated to exploring dating violence measurement is limited. However, because measurement comprises the basis for all empirical findings in the field, it is critical to assess the current measurement landscape, including key gaps and potential for innovation. To that end, this chapter reviews measures (both behavioral and attitudinal) currently used in ADV research, including a summary of measure quality for commonly used behavioral measures. Based on this review, the chapter then discusses key limitations facing the field (including issues with measurement of psychological aggression, cyber aggression, sexual violence, stalking and healthy relationships), and describes pressing areas for future research on this topic. The chapter concludes with a review of recent innovations in dating violence measurement and potential implications of measurement for future research and practice.
