Abstract

There are both, an inadequate semantic and an interpretative mistake when the term AIDS is used as an equivalent of HIV infection. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) can be attributed to different etiologies, besides the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The immunitary state if of great importance for human beings. When there exists a primary or secundary immunitary deficiency, the aggressions by etiologic agents (bacterial, viral, micotic or parasitic), are frequent. This report is an up-to-date revision based on the author's personal experience, related to the immunitary condition, connected with the immunodeficiency syndrome and the HIV infection. The present management of the compromised host in HIV infection, prophylaxis, pathophysiology, clinical presentation and evaluation of patients with HIV disease, complication and AIDS-related opportunistic infections and antiviral therapy, are considered and reported.
