Abstract

The latest development of deepfake technology has had a significant influence on the creation and distribution of content on online media. It brings all kinds of possibilities, particularly in the area of false information, therefore it also presents significant challenges. Deepfake content, involving the use of artificial intelligence to create super-realistic but fake videos and images, can potentially deceive the audience and manipulate public opinion. Based on these phenomena, the paper explores three major topics— technology background of deepfake, content differences between deepfake and traditional forgery, and the impact of deepfake content on public trust. The paper also provides three specific examples in different areas (Politics, Entertainment, and News Media) to help people understand the relationship between deepfake content and public trust.
