Abstract

Cerebrovascular diseases are one of the major causes of death and morbidity in the entire world. In this paper, we reviewed the initial approach of the patients with ischemic stroke, the most common form of cerebrovascular disease. Treatment with the recombinant tissue plasminogen activator remains the most beneficial proven intervention for emergency treatment of stroke, but just a few patients can receive it. New interventions such as mechanical recanalization, intra-arterial thrombolytic agents and neuroprotective agents are under investigation. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora.
