Abstract

This article examines the role of urban public space as an implementation stage of social contingencies for the creation and sustainability of cultural practices that could contribute to citizen coexistence. The paper analyzes the combined effect of the occasions, the behavioral consequences, and learning by rules as important elements of metacontingencies. It is emphasized the programming of interdependent contingencies to ensure the maintenance of desirable social practices in the urban public space. Suggestions for designing metacontingencies to maintain and produce desirable social practices in public space are offered.
