Abstract

Small, G.W. and Barber, A.S., 1992. Application of digital filtering and pattern recognition techniques to interferogram-based Fourier transform infrared qualitative analysis. Investigation of spectral interferences. Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems, 15:203-217. Studies are described which evaluate the impact of spectral interferences on interferogram-based Fourier transform infrared qualitative analyses. The analysis of target analytes is accomplished by the implementation of an automated detection algorithm based on the application of digital filtering and pattern recognition techniques to a short interferogram segment. Successful detection algorithms are developed for the test compounds SF6 and Freon 11. Freon 12 is used as an interference in the analysis. Overlapping spectral bands among the compounds allow the detection methodology to be tested for its resistance to the effects of interferences. Interfering species are observed to have an impact on the analyses only if the analyte signal is swamped by the signal due to the interference. The results of these studies indicate that the interferogram-based analysis is compatible with remote sensing applications in which multiple infrared-active species are present. © 1992.
