Abstract
The ability to write is a skill that must be mastered students. Expressing ideas and ideas into written form is not easy. After observation and interviews in SMA Negeri 14 Padang found problems as follows. This problem is motivated by things as follows. First, the lack of student interest in writing. Second, the difficulty of determining the exact theme and diction in writing an essay, although exercise concocted've often they do. Third, teachers do not use learning techniques in accordance with the material being taught in writing class essay exposition. This study aimed to describe the ability of class X SMA Negeri 14 Padang in essay writing exposition using mind mapping techniques. This type of research is quantitative descriptive method. The results of this study showed that the average picture essay writing abilities exposition through mind mapping technique class X SMA Negeri 14 Padang an increase from prior use mind mapping techniques with after using mind mapping techniques. Improvements can be seen from the average value of the results of essay writing ability exposition class X SMA Negeri 14 Padang by using a mind map technique increases. The average value of the ability to write essay exposition increased to 76.67 with qualifying well. When viewed from the ability to write essay students exposition an increase of 9.67% using mind mapping techniques, then there is a significant increase.
