There have been numerous reports that dosimeters read high on impulsive type noises. In reality, dosimeters read lower than theory would predict. The problem comes about because of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration 5 db exchange rate. It is not possible for a simple dosimeter to correctly compute the noise dose for a 5 db exchange rate for noises that vary in level at intervals of 10 seconds or less. This is because the 5 db exchange rate violates basic laws of physics. Dosimeter with a 3 db exchange rate (L//e//q) are able to correctly compute the dose for rapidly varying (impulsive) noises.
