Abstract

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy developed in the China in the context that mental health has become a significant social and public health problem due to the remarkable social and economic changes in the last 30 years. This paper uses the development of psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Shanghai Mental Health Center as an illustration of its benefits for China, and the difficulties and obstacles it encounters in Chinese culture. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
