Abstract

Peru is one of the most recognized international tourist destinations in South America. The origin of its tourism development comes from the diversity of its cultural and natural heritage. However, the country's tourist evolution has been conditioned by a convulsive political history, especially the twentieth century. National and international social and economic contexts have conditioned the potential of tourism in the country, including the irregular support of the Peruvian state. In this way, this article reviews, from a historiographic approach, the interference of tourism policy, affecting the second half of the twentieth century. This explains the irregular growth of tourism until the year 2000.
