OPG and RANKL expression after application of hydroxyapatite tooth graft

Abstract

Periodontal disease can be treated with a surgical procedure using a bone graft. Tooth graft is an alternative graft for Guided Tissue Regeneration because tooth graft consists of organic and inorganic materials which are very similar to bone. The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential of hydroxyapatite from tooth graft as an alternative for conventional bone graft using OPG and RANKL as parameters. This research is a study on Wistar mice by post only control group design. In this study, 18 Wistar mice divided into 2 groups, control group, and tooth graft groups. On the tooth graft group, the mice socket post extraction was filled with hydroxyapatite, while the sockets from the control group were left untreated. OPG and RANKL expressions were analyzed on the fourteenth day after the application of hydroxyapatite. Independent T-test is used to analyze the results. The result of the expression of OPG between the control group and the tooth graft group showed that p<0,05 which mean that there was a significant difference. The result of the expression of RANKL between the control group and the tooth graft group showed that p<0,05 which mean that there was a significant difference. The expression of OPG and RANKL in the tooth graft group showed that p>0,05, which mean there was no significant difference. From this study can be concluded that the hydroxyapatite tooth graft is able to enhance the expression of OPG and RANKL.
