Abstract

Maintenance of cytoplasmic calcium homeostasis is critical for all cells. An exciting field has emerged in elucidating the multiple roles that Ca 2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) plays in regulating Ca2+ cycling in normal cardiac myocytes and in pathophysiological states. Moreover, CaMKII was recently identified as a potential drug target in cardiac disease. This work has given us a closer view of the complexity and therapeutic possibilities of CaMKII regulation of Ca 2+ signaling in cardiac myocytes. © 2006 Springer-Verlag.
