Abstract

The use of polymeric derivatives of cisplatin as antiviral drugs is reviewed. Some of these drugs inhibit a wide variety of both RNA and DNA viruses including those responsible for herpes, common colds, chickenpox, and smallpox. The desirability of polymeric drugs is described as is the mode(s) of action of cisplatin itself. A description of viruses and methods of combating viruses is presented. Included is a review of current antiviral agents as well as modes of action of these antiviral agents. © 2008 Springer New York.
