Abstract

Diabetic neuropathy is defined as the dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system secondary to diabetes mellitus. It represents the most frequent complication of diabetes. It is the most frequent cause of neuropathy in the western world. It is associated with an enhanced risk of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. It is the main risk factor of diabetic foot. It is categorized into different clinical syndromes with different pathogenic mechanisms and treatments. This article reviews the current knowledge on pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy. A case is discussed.
