Abstract

Qualitative research with a case study approach was used to describe the historical-narrative (Droysen) of the existences of two groups established in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, by conducting historical reconstruction methods, field research and interviews as well. The transformation of Batak Opera is an event of transition of traditional objects through 'improvement' originating from the tradition itself or endogenous changes, namely cultural subjects as actors (heirs), in the same location with different time and space. Improvement as a result of the transition occurs in the form of changes in vision (values) and forms (concepts) in the structure of Batak Opera, which results in new identities, values and meanings. The significance of the existence of Tilhang Serindo in the Classical Batak Opera is as a secular entertainment art with Batak-centric cultural identity in the 20th century. Meanwhile, the presence of PLOT as a representative art is an attempt by an ethnic entity to revive and continue the vision of Classical Batak Opera, through the 'enrichment' of the 21st century oral tradition art and is defined as Transitional Batak Opera.
