Calling for a Transformative Destination Development: Narrative, Mindset and System

Abstract

The current global challenges are difficult to overcome through small or incremental progress. Adaption may not be enough to answer the novel needs and pace that sustainability, geopolitical uncertainties and social and economic changes require. With its cross-sectoral character, the tourism industry seems an ideal place for disruptive and transformational actions. However, the tourism system may not be a strong agent of change, as hoped. Therefore, this article unveils unfavourable structures and illustrates potentials for a transformative destination development. From a conceptual perspective, a transformative destination development may be one that is prepared for crises, sensitive to global and local changes, ahead of trends and leading sustainable development. Therefore, the stakeholders in a destination need to develop a joint understanding of change and a culture of transformation. This change may be supported by integrating local perspectives and bringing joint efforts into focus, as intended by the “Ecosystem of Hospitality”.
