Abstract
Hyphessobrycon clavatus spec. nov. is described as a member of the agilha-subgroup of the heterorhabdus-group sensu GERY (1978) from Peru. The colouration in life is an important feature in this group. H. clavatus spec. nov. has a completely differently colouration in life from all known species of the genus. This relates to the humeral spot which is not developed and the dark diffuse longitudinal band is indifferent developed. The longitudinal band starts dependent on the environment behind the operculum or below the dorsal fin and runs to the tips of the middle rays of the caudal fin. A golden or silvery stripe above the longitudinal band is not developed. More features are: (1) the body is relatively short and high, looks somewhat like a club (body depth 3.04 (2.69 to 3.32) times in body length). (2) There are in the maxillary bone in the mean six (6.40 (four to eight)) conical to tricuspid teeth. (3) In the outer row of the praemaxillary bone are in the mean two (1.68 (one to three)) tricuspid teeth. (4) In a longitudinal row are 31 (31.27 (30 to 32)) scales. (5) The lateral line is relatively short and has developed in the mean five (5.18 (four to six)) pored scales. (6) The ventral fins reach in the males beyond the origin of anal fin, but not in the females. (7) There are small hooks on the first six to seven divided fin rays of the anal fin of the males, also on the first fin rays of the ventral fins. (8) Four (4.18 (three to five)) scales are on the beginning of the base of anal fin. (9) The number of vertebrae is in the mean 32 (32.72 (32 to 33)). (10) There are in the mean 19 (18.81 (17 to 20)) divided anal fin rays.
