Pull factors in the political economy of international commercial sex work in Nigeria

Abstract

The author investigated what factors draw Nigerian girls & women into sex work in Benin City. Among the key factors are the massive devaluation of the local currency, which makes trafficking for foreign currency highly attractive, along with the endemic poverty of the country & the disadvantages faced by daughters in a patriarchal, primogeniture-based system. The best way to counteract the attractiveness of sexual trafficking as the goal of girls & women is to create jobs for the youth of the nation, perhaps through government micro-loans. 62 References.
