Abstract

This study examines the distribution of housing in disaster-prone areas in Banda Aceh, a region devastated by a major disaster two decades ago, resulting in significant loss of life and economic hardship. The focus is on Deah Raya, as one area with a tendency towards new housing development. Although the city has undergone substantial reconstruction, the development trajectory has often overlooked the prevailing disaster vulnerabilities in the region. The research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology, analyzing disaster-prone areas through the overlay of disaster maps with land use maps in ArcGIS software. The results show that eighty-one out of ninety villages in Banda Aceh are at risk from earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and liquefaction, with varying levels of vulnerability from low to high. On the other hand, Deah Raya which is located in a coastal area is only prone to tsunamis, earthquakes, and liquefaction. Therefore, by identifying the distribution of housing in Deah Raya, this research highlights the need for local authorities to incorporate disaster risk into urban planning and regulations, especially residential planning.
